The Good (news), The Bad (grammar) & The Ugly (duckling)
I hinted at it in my last post but it’s time to make the news official regarding my next book Bad Grammar.
The Good (news)
So the good news is that Walker Books Australia will be publishing Bad Grammar. It is slated for a Jan/Feb 2013 release. I am expected to have my changes made by April and then begins the process of copy editing, cover design etc. So it is a bit of a wait, but I’m sure no one will get sick of hearing me talk about it between now and then. I’ve already started work on one of two follow up novels (with the working title of Gasbag) but we’ll wait to see how that pans out as to whether BG will become a series or not.
The Bad (grammar)
What is Bad Grammar about, I hear you say, well I’m hoping it’s you speaking (really loudly), because otherwise it is one of the voices in my head again. Well, to answer your question, in my contract with Walker, they have summarised the story like this: A comic novel about a young computer nerd who, through a series of misunderstandings, finds himself sent to a tough reform school in the Australian outback. Walker have said it is laugh out loud funny, which is always a good sign!
The Ugly (duckling)
And now for the part of the blog where we think deeply about something. Today I would like to pose the following question: When have you ever seen an ugly duckling? Even the most malnourished duck with molting feathers is still cute. Maybe if the duck had two heads, a foot sticking out of each head, and pimples, then it could be considered ugly but in all the versions of the story I’ve seen, this has never been the case. Therefore the story should be titled The Slightly Less Cute Duckling (And His Ugly Inferiority Complex). It’s a catchier title anyhow and if Hans Christian Anderson weren’t dead, I’d pass on my feedback.
There are many other things in development that I am tight-lipped about at the moment, so keep checking in. I’ll also be updating this website with some new stuff in the next month or so. Stay tuned … 2012 is set to be an exciting year!
